Steak and Eggs
It’s not possible for me to be in a bad mood in front of a
plate of steak and eggs. It’s either the start of a good day or the meal needed
after a good night. Chicken-and-waffles always makes me smile too. (Get this
sandwich at the Flying Rhino in Worcester. Trust me.)
I’ve never had a reputation for enduring patience but am
guessing that 2020 has even exhausted it for the monks. So, I’m trying to
appreciate the little victories and unexpected gifts like 70-degree days in
November. Masters’ final round with NFL football today is really cool. But I hope
it never happens again. 18 on 11-14 felt great. Hope that happens again. With
all this ‘new normal’ practice we are getting I know I’m becoming more aware of
the diversions bringing me some peace. Golf. Great Spotify playlists from
friends, family, and that remarkable algorithm. (“Green grass and high tides
forever.”) My dogs sleeping hard. Comedy - on Twitter, on TV, on that text
thread with my buddies. Damn have I needed them and that.
English historian Thomas Fuller gets frequent credit for first
saying something like “things seem to get darkest before the dawn.” I have this
odd mix of optimism and short-term dread. I think the next 60 days or so aren’t
going to have a lot of light. But it’s coming. I hope you get the steak and
eggs in the meantime.
